The traumatic blood donation experience

I specially booked an appointment for my 5th blood donation today, so that i can get priority. I arrived at 12pm and if nothing went wrong, i shld be done by about 12.30. But i only managed to leave the place at about 1pm.
The crippled left hand. They gave me a cool pack to reduce the swelling.
Had the usual things done, like sterilising the area, injecting the anaesthetic blah blah.
Then just a few minutes into the donation, the machine starting beeping. Then the nurse realised my blood wasn't flowing properly. She then found out that my vein shifted position, hindering the blood flow.
She tried to shift the needle a little but it didn't help. SO..
She pulled it out a little, turned it a little, poked it back in, turned it here and there.. repeated the process several times. Woah, the "digging" was rather uncomfortable. She tried holding on to the needle to sort of "direct" the blood flow but it wasn't too successful either.
In the end, i was starting to feel some slight pain so she checked it again. She said my vein "collapsed" so she had to terminate the donation.
And so.. my bag was barely half full. The blood will still be used though. Thankfully.
Now, the area feels super sore. I'm gonna expect a huge bruise tomorrow. -.-"
Think i'm gonna have the donation on the right hand the next time. If the same thing happens again, then i'm really super suay. |
